Holland's Appreciation
To the New York Herald Tribune:
A letter from a dear old friend
in The Hague, Holland, is so heart
felt in its appreciation of the
efforts of the Americans during
the time of the floods that I am
quoting excerpts herewith in the
thought that your readers will be
interested and pleased to read it.
"The floods have been horrible.
Many, many lives lost (about
1,300) and the best and most fertile
part of our country absolutely
swept. Our engineers hope to re
build the dikes this summer if
everything goes well, but I doubt
if we will ever reclaim the islands.
If we do, we have to thank the
magnificent help of your country
men for it, help accorded us from
the first daysaving people, bring
ing cover and food, and now sup
porting us with docks and dredgers
and launches, your soldiers work
ing like devils (or rather like
angels) to help us combat this
calamity. If you know anybody
who is in any way interested in
these things, please tell them how
indebted the people of Holland are
to your nation."
