i
Will Express Appreciation
of Holland for Relief
Prince Bernhard of the Nether
lands arrived in New York yester- -
day on a KLM air liner from Am
sterdam to express his country's
appreciation for American flood
relief to Holland and to complete
a series of engagements he was
forced to cancel Feb. 23, when the
floods struck Holland while he was
on a visit here.
Prince Bernhard was met at r
Idlewild Airport by a group of of-
fieials headed by J. H. Roijen, J
Netherlands Ambassador to the t
United States, and Baron Jan De j
Vos Van Steenwijk, Dutch Consul
General in New York.
As chairman of the National
i Disaster Fund of the Netherlands.
Prince Bernhard will receive final
reports of many local flood-relief i
committees in the United States
at a ceremony in Washington on j
Tuesday.
The Prince told reporters at the
airport that there are still dikes
in Holland which have not yet
been repaired and that water is
still coming in at some places. J'
The Prince explained that in
some places the churning waters 1
have torn holes 200 to 300 feet
long in the dikes and that cur- 1
rents have been so strong that1
even ships, sunk in the breaks to 1
plug the holes, were forced back
into the sea.
Prince Bernhard will attend a
dinner tonight at the Nether land
1 Club at 10 Rockefeller Plaza. To- i
I morrow he will be guest at lunch-
i eon at the Union Club, Park Ave.
and 69th St., and on Monday he
j will make an official visit to the
offices of Holland Flood Relief.
Inc., 72 Wall St. He is planning
to return to Holland March 31.
