Blanks! Blanks! ne of the most abusive and uncalled I lof niiselts unon Mr.Quintus. a Hollander, who 1 has been a resident in our village, o..- ed a weekly paper of respectable size, in the Holland language the past three year?. We say it without fear of contradiction, that .Mr. Quintus is a gentleman, and that he stands high in this community as a man and a citizen, and i few indeed, are more generally esteemed. He attends promptly to his own affairs, and is eve ry way worthy the confidence of his neighbors. The Jownal is well known to be a channel th ro' which abuse flow? vithont interruption, and for some time past, we have been prominent in the original articles of that sheetbut knowing as we do, that the public have no confidence in the paper, we avoid alluding to it. The last paper seems to have a new subject, in the person of Mr. Quintus, and because he is ''dutch," as the Journal says, and publishes a dutch sïéet stven-by-nine" he has no particular business to live; and the article would warrant the belief that he would soon be annihilated, by the powerful mind that presides over the col umns of the Lake Joitrnul. As the Journal is j not taken and read by all our citizens, we will copy a part of the article in reference to Mr. Quintus, although we are aware that the lan i guage used, is a disgrace to the colums of any paper PERSONAL.—There is published in this1 village a seven-by-nine Dutch paper, the repu- led editor of which is one J. Quint-ow, whose visage is the very index of meanness arid hypoc risy. This fellow has recently published about I the streets here ami in his Dutch sheet, that we I were mainly instrumental in procuring his de I feat for nomination as candidate for Town Clerk at the recent election. We should not trouble I oursclf to notice this matter, were it not that perhaps some of our democratic friends abroad, J who are unacquainted with the facts, might think we had been guilty of party infidelity.— I Heic, where the facts are known; it makes not the least difference. Now we pronounce this j statement an unqualified and malicious false- j hood. The above is from the last lake Journal which we ore sorry to say is published in this i village, anil a paper that would like to be con- sidered respectable. Publications of this kind disgrace a community in which the paper con taining them has the appearance of being taincd. Mr. Qcintvs started in this village some lime since, a small paper in the Holland lan- i guage, and by industry, perseverance and econ- oroy, has enlarged the paper from time to time, and in order that his readers may he able to J acquire a knowledge of the English language, he devotes a portion of his sheet to that pur- pose. All matters of news which 1 c publishes in the Holland language, must be translated, j which makes a great deal more labor, and all items of Holland intelligence which he desires to give to his readers in English, he also has to I translate. We are safe in making the statement that no editor of a weekly paper in the stale I devotes as many hours to his readers as this I same J. Quintus. notwithstanding he publishes a "seven-by-nine dutch sheet." He is so far su- peri or to the published editor of the Lake Jour- mil, in point of talent and gentlemanly bearing, that the English language is not rich enough to draw a 'comparison, and we undertake to say that this same Dutch sheet" has double the in- flnence in this community, that the Journal has. This Holland paper, in politics, is democratic, and' the editor of the latter no doubt feels jeal- ous of the high reputation of Mr. Quintus, and I takes this course to kill him off, but allow us to predict that he will outlive all such papers as the Journal. nts are now beginning to bp made of cork, he speaker ol" the House of Commons en- ilaiy of $30,000 per annum, is now said to have been Kossuth's in- witli about 40 of his countrymen, to re- porarily in Belgium, and there quietly to io progress of events in Europe. Abbas Pacha, the present Victory of Egypt, is a very liberal and enlightened personage. He has reduced his own revenue voluntarily, nearly three millions of dollars per annum, by taking off the.poll tax; he has expended §350.000 on the carriage way across the Isthmus of Suez, he has improved the navigation of the Nile, and is now constructing a railway between Cairo and Alex andria. One of the arguments made use of in Eng land in favor of continuing the explorations in search of Sir Jólm Franklin is, that the Arctic regions produce at least eight kinds of vegetables, all of which are nutritious, and that, therefore, there is no risk of starvation to be encouutored by the explorers. A fashionable dress-maker, near the Place Vendorae, Paris, had an eagle, crowned, painted on her shop window. It was soon covered with mud and filth, thrown at it by the passers by, and in the night, a ball from an air gun smashed the whole affair. Stale. The emigration from Germany is said to bo increasing, and resembles the Irish emigration, as the exodus of nation. Through the city of Co logne there hare passed, in the course of brief pe riod, upwards of 20,000 persons. A severe storm was experienced at Balti more last week,: causing considerable damage to the city. In several places the wharves were over flowed with water.filiing cellars and earning away large quantities of valuable property. The Dunkirk 'Journal' states that the present arrangements of the New York and Erie Rail rond Company for the laying of their second track, are such that a distance of sixty miles be tween New York and Dunkirk will be saved. The saving is mostly gained between Lackawaxen and Lanesboro, and Elmira and Owego. When com pleted. the second track will be the shortest possible route by which the west can reach New- York.
