heeft Martin Verbrugge bij toeval
ontdekt. Kom maar eens mee,
wenkt hij, en hij loopt richting de
units waar de militairen zich altijd
verzamelen. Aan de zijkant hangt
een groot informatiebord over de
geschiedenis van Vlissingen. Van
Napoleon tot het Joodse monu
ment, het staat er allemaal op.
,,Vlissingen is important to the
United States military today as a lo
gistics node", leest Verbrugge
hardop voor. Hij straalt nog harder
dan hij al deed. ,,Ik zag het ineens
toen ik hier rondliep en heb er ge

de Schelde. De aanwezigheid van
de Amerikanen voelt alles behalve
onveilig. Ik ben juist blij een steen
tje te kunnen bijdragen aan het ver
dedigen van onze vrijheid."
Hoe goed beveiligd en georgani
seerd ook, streng is de stemming op
het terrein niet. Eerder gezellig. Op
sommige tanks zijn draakjes gete
kend. ,,Voor onze militairen is dit
ook een avontuur", vertelt luite
nant-kolonel Hirsch. ,,Deze brigade
woont in Duitsland, de meesten
blijven hier een jaar of drie. Ze
brengen de voertuigen ook niet zelf
naar Polen, dat doet weer een an
dere brigade."
Terrein niet af
Tot die tijd zitten de militairen
'vast' op het terrein van Verbrugge.
Vlissingse cafés hoeven dezer we
ken geen Amerikanen aan de bar te
verwachten, want ze gaan het ter
rein nauwelijks af. De luitenant-ko
lonel legt uit dat dat zelden gebeurt
bij militaire operaties.
Wat niet betekent dat de Ameri
kaanse militairen niets meekrijgen
van de stad waar ze zich bevinden,
