een eeuwgeleden
geleden dat de Eer
ste Wereldoorlog
uitbrak. Die oorlog
was het eerste, ech
te gemechaniseer
de conflict tussen wereldmachten.
Wat betreft gevallenen op het slag
veld verwijst WOI met meer dan ne
gen miljoen gesneuvelden de Tweede
Wereldoorlog in een macabere optel
som naar het tweede plan. In
Groot-Brittannië en de VS heeft men
het niet voor niets over The Great
War als er over de Eerste Wereldoor
log wordt gesproken.
In die jaren was het een Nederlandse
politiek tekenaar die in kranten in bin
nen- en buitenland met pen en pot
lood streed tegen de barbaarse slacht
partijen in de loopgraven.
Louis Raemaekers wordt op 6 april
1869 in Roermond geboren als zoon
van de Roermondse boekdrukker en
uitgever Joseph Raemaekers en diens
vrouw Amelie Michels. Het gezin is
van huis uit katholiek, maar leeft in
een politiek liberaal milieu. Met een
kunstliefhebber als vader, die tekent
en aquarelleert, is de artistieke roe
ping van Louis snel verklaard. Na een
opleiding in Amsterdam tot tekenle
raar, verschijnt al gauw werk van Rae
maekers in Elseviers Geïllustreerde
Maandschrift. Louis is dan 23 jaar. In
Brussel bekwaamt hij zich vervolgens
in het schilderen. Na het overlijden
van zijn vader kiest Louis voor een
werkkring in het onderwijs. Hij
wordt directeur en tekenleraar aan de
Avondteekenschool in Wageningen.
Tegelijkertijd verwerft Raemaekers
als illustrator van korte verhalen en
kinderboeken een zekere naam. Werk
wordt tentoongesteld en verkocht,
maar het kostwinnerschap - in 1902

was hij getrouwd met de Haarlemse
Jo Mansvelt en in de volgende jaren
worden drie kinderen geboren - valt
hem zwaar. In 1905 maakt hij een
prentenboek voor zijn kinderen, dat
hem zijn eerste aanstelling als poli
tiek tekenaar bezorgt.
Op 3 januari 1906 verschijnt zijn eer
ste politieke tekening in het Alge
meen Handelsblad. Sommige van zijn
tekeningen beslaan wel vijf kolom
men, maar een duidelijk politiek
standpunt ontbreekt in de spotpren
ten. Na publicatie van een bundel ge
naamd Ha, Ha, Ha, alweer een vredes-
