ontwikkeling als vernieuwend
kunstenaar. We zien hem als een
goedmoedige lobbes die altijd be
zig is met vijlen, beitelen, buigen,
assembleren en schilderen en voor
de camera soms malle fratsen uit
haalt. Hij was altijd goedgemutst:
„Als ik sombere gedachten krijg,
val ik in slaap."
Daarnaast zijn er archiefbeelden
die de sfeer van zijn tijd oproepen.
Zoals de bouw, in de Grote Depres
sie, van het Empire State Building
in Manhattan.
Calder zei over zijn eigen werk:
„Het is volkomen nutteloos en
zonder betekenis. Als je het be
grijpt, kan het je erg aangrijpen."
