hotelbar die onbegrijpelijke wereld
gadeslaan, moeten de kandidaten
hun best doen om de Japanse cul
tuur te doorgronden. Daarbij ont
komt de serie niet aan enkele ste
reotypen, zoals de hardvochtig
heid van de Japanse maffia. Ook
de fascinatie van de Japanner voor
zoetsappigheid komt aan bod.
„In mijn modellentijd merkte ik al
dat ze daar vallen voor alles wat
jong en onschuldig is. Je ziet over
al lolitameisjes. Ik keek er enorm
van op dat bruidsjurken werden
geshowd door meisjes van 14,15
jaar. Dat wordt in Nederland van
zulke jonge meisjes nooit ge
vraagd."
Verbaan hecht eraan dat Lost in To
kyo geen aapjes-kijken wordt.
„Neem Hello Kitty. Je kan je afvra
gen: welke weldenkende volwasse
ne neemt een broodtrommeltje
met zo'n tekenfilmfiguurtje onder
de arm mee naar zijn werk. Wat
stom en kinderachtig. Of: welke ge
slaagde zakenman stapt er in he
melsnaam in een mierzoete roze
Hello Kitty-wagen? Onbegrijpelijk
en bizar."
Maar je kan je ook proberen te ver
diepen in de achterliggende oorza
ken. En dat is precies wat van de
kandidaten gevraagd wordt, do
ceert de presentatrice. „Die behoef
te aan een poezelige, zuurstokroze
wereld valt te verklaren als je je
realiseert hoe hard het leven daar
kan zijn. Dit is een fantasie om in
te vluchten."
