Dutch Celebrate Flood-Repair
Work at Hellevoetsluis
I >....1. r. I I..' - - C,
HELLEVOETSLUIS, the Nether
lands, Feb. 28 UP)Today, four
weeks after death-dealing seas
flooded a sixth of Holland's arable
land, the first of thirty big dike
holes was successfully plugged
here.
Villagers anxiously watched the
delicate operation which will sal-
vagesome 6,500 acres of fertile
farmland now under salt water.
Workers drifted a 150-foot barge
between two dike ends and filled
it with sand at ebb tide. Then they
sandbagged the space left between
the barge and the dikes.
There was a festive air among
the villagers as they watched
scores of Dutch engineers super
vising the operation.
