The news from Califurme is especially interes
ting. The mining accounts continue highly fa
vorable. Sheriff Buchanan has been shot, at the
Sonora camp, near Sacramento, by a party con
sisting of eight Mexican murnubers. The Vigi
lance Committee of Sacramento were active in the
matter, and bad made several arrests.—The last
report states that the Sheriff had died of his
wounds.
Several other murders have been committed
in the neighborhood of Maysville and Sacramen
to, by Mexicans. During'a fortnight there has
been" but a moderate business doing. Prices re
main about the same as on the 1st inst. Flour is
selling in small quantities for home consumption;
prime quality 612. There is no speculative fee
ling of any kind in merchandize. Holders are
unwilling to make any concessions.Shipments
from the Atlantic States are expected now to be
small, the emigration is so large.Goods are
shipped in moderate quantities for Oregon. The
shock of an earthquake was felt at San Francisco
on the eve of Nov. 25th.
The large number at the mines had been de
ceived by the trains and seek winter quarters in
Sail Francisco. The rains have flooded the cel
lars and stores in the lower portions of the city.
From the Sandwich Islands.Advices have
been received at San Francisco from the Sand
wich Islands to Oct. 25th.

An Incident of Kossuths reception. As Kos
suth's carriage was passing Ball's store in Broad
way, a young lady dressed in white, wearing a
Hungarian scarf, holding a wreath of roses, with
"Welcome Kossuth," inscribed in gilt letters,
presented a basket of splendid fruit to Kossuth,
who received it with great pleasure. On presen
ting the fruit the young lady said
Noble Kossuthaccept these fruits of America.
May your own nation, in its independence, pre
sent such toother heroes of down-trod nations.
The Old Oaken Bucket. We lenm from the
Madison Democrat that the Old Oaken Bucket,
the Organ of the Sons of Temperance in this
State, is hereafter to be printed at Madison, and
John "W. Hunt, Grand Scribe, will have charge
of the editorial and business branches.
New Steamboats building at Buffalo.The
Buffalo Express says there are now on the stocks
in that city, to be completed by the opening of
navigation in the springthree of the largest class
steamerstwo of medium sizetwo large cluss
propellers and one schooner. Negotiations are
going on for the building of three more large pro-
pi Hers, the keels of which will probably be laid
within a few weeks. The aggregate tonnage now
under contract is over G000 tons.
AdvertisingIts advantages."To expatiate
on the advantages of advertising would, at the
present day, be a superfluous labor. The law of
gravitation is not more uniform, certain and infal-
iblc, than that by which the liberal advertiser
will reap a. hundred fold the petty cost of making
known his commodities to the buyer, or his wants
to the seller. The man who should at the pre
sent day doubt the indispensable necessity of
this method of doing business, should be ranked
with the pious but narrow minded recluse, who
thought that the sun shone no where but in his
own "cell."St. Louis Union.
What is a Year.
What is a year? 'Tis but a wavo
On lifo's dark rolling stream.
Which i9 so quickly gone that wo
Account it but a dream.
'Tis but a single earnest throb,
Ol Time's old iron heart.
Which tireless now and strong as when
It first with life did start.
What is a year? 'Tis but a turn
Of Time's old brazen wheel
Or but a page upon the book
Which dcntli must shortly seal.
'T is but a step upon the road
Which we must travel o'er,
A few more steps and we shall walk
Lifo's weary road no more.
What is a year? 'T is but a breath
From Time's old nostrils blown.
As rushing onwnrd o'er the oartli.
We hear his weary nioan.
'T is but a bobble on the wavo,
Or dew upon the lawn.
As transient as the mists of morn
Bonoath the summer sun.
What is a year? 'T is but a type
Of life's oft changing scone.
Youth's happy morn comes gaitv on
Willi hills and valleys green.
Neat, Snmmor's prime succeeds the Spring,
Then Autumn with a tenr.
Then comes old Winter—death and all
Must find their level here.

presented to the great Hungarian patriot in Lon
don lately, by a number of British ladies. Upon
receiving it, Kossuth said:
"I take it for no merit in my life that I am a
religious man, not for any merit of mine, but be
cause it is a necessity to every honest and think
ing man, and because it is the most ricli and fruit
ful source of those sentiments and those feelings
which lead to happiness in this world and bliss in
the wurld to come. I shall value it because I take
religion to be the most rich source of that conso
lation which I have wanted so often in my life.
Being a religious man, and because religious, as
well an enemy to superstition, intolerance and fa
naticism, as on the other hand, the friend of free
dom, I readily confess that it is from this great
book, that I have learned the principle of loving
my neighbor as myself, and st re right and courage
to act in the great cause which has always been
the guide of my life. Judge from this how I prize
this gift to me presented on the part of some la
dies, and of which a copy was also presented by
an honorable working man to my wife at Win
chester. This, sir, will remain as the choicest
gift I have received.
