ge manier waarop alle aspecten
worden belicht, komt het ongrijp
bare popidool als persoon dichter
bij. Dat hij publiekelijk zelden het
achterste van zijn tong liet zien,
was volgens zijn naasten begrijpe
lijk: „Iedereen heeft een hoekje
dat hij voor zichzelf houdt."
Eind jaren tachtig raakte Mercury
besmet met hiv. Hij trok zich in
1991 doodziek terug in zijn buiten
huis annex studio in Montreux.
Zelfs op zijn sterfbed wist hij zijn
fysieke aftakeling nog voor de bui
tenwereld verborgen te houden.
Hij wilde voor geen prijs dat de
mythe bezoedeld raakte.
