enkele keer had Mankell geluk en
mocht hij bij zijn vader komen kij
ken.
Zelf meent de schrijver dat hij
door de ervaringen in zijn jeugd
graag over verantwoordelijkheid
en moraal schrijft. Nooit vertelt hij
een misdaadgeschiedenis uitslui
tend vanwege het spannende ver
haal. „Ik wil altijd praten over be
paalde zaken in de maatschappij",
heeft hij vaak gezegd. Volgens
Mankell gaat een goed misdaadver
haal niet om de moord die wordt
opgelost, maar om de psychologi
sche beschouwing van de cultuur
die het weerspiegelt.
