in een chique nachtclub was een
sensatie. Een slonzige meid, zo uit
de goot, maar dan die stem!
Net zo expressief en overtuigend is
Cotillard als ze de rauwe wanhoop
moet verbeelden wanneer Piafs
grote liefde, de getrouwde bokser
Marcel Cerdan, bij een vliegtuigon
geluk om het leven komt.
Uiteindelijk werkt de film in een
soort spiraalbeweging toe naar een
indrukwekkende finale, waarin de
al doodzieke Piaf wankel, maar
met ongebroken stem, voor het
eerst het onsterfelijke Non, je ne
regrette rien ten gehore brengt.
