ken. Ter compensatie heeft Payne
de harde waarheden verzacht met
een licht absurdistische toets en
een flinke scheut mededogen. Om
te laten zien dat ook een gefrus
treerd mens gevoel heeft, is er ten
slotte de originele vondst van het
Foster Parents-kind in Afrika. In
de brieven die hij dat joch stuurt,
kan Schmidt zijn hart luchten.
Nicholson zag deze vertolking in
2003 bekroond met een Golden
Globe en een Oscarnominatie. De
Oscar hield hij al driemaal vast:
voor One Flew Over the Cuckoo's
Nest (1975), Terms of Endearment
(1983) en As Good as it Gets (1997).
