men. Ook is haar gezondheid
slecht. „Ik bid iedere dag tot God
dat hij me beter maakt en vraag
hem om kracht en moed", zegt ze
op droevige toon.
Nu ze niet langer samen sterk
staan, krijgen de voormalig clanle
den regelmatig verwensingen naar
hun hoofd geslingerd. Van vreem
den, maar eveneens van familiele
den. „Ze zeggen dat mijn uiterlijk
mijn vader de das om heeft ge
daan, dat hij is gestorven vanwege
zijn zorgen-om mij", aldus Sahi
die er tot zijn vijftiende normaal
uitzag.
De vier zijn enthousiast als ze ver
nemen dat een befaamde Britse
chirurg naar Indonesië wil komen
om ze te diagnosticeren en, zo mo
gelijk, te behandelen. Ze zien in de
ze David Koppel hun laatste kans
op een normaal leven en reizen
naar Jakarta voor een ontmoeting
met de arts. Een eerste blik op Sa
hi en Sakim leert Koppel dat zij lij
den aan neurofibromatose, een
ziekte waarbij de patiënt goedaar
dige gezwellen ontwikkelt. Zodra
hij hoort dat de aandoening erfe
lijk kan zijn, stort Sahi in. Hij
vreest dat zijn twaalfjarige zoon
op eenzelfde manier als hij zal ein
digen.
Sahi laat enkele van de honderden
tumoren waarmee zijn gezicht en
lichaam bedekt zijn, verwijderen.
Het resultaat van deze operatie is
vanavond te zien.
