Hamburg er spoorde de trompet
tist Vasyl Baranovsky op, de enige
in de hele streek die nog met klez-
mer-musici had gespeeld. En, o
toeval, woonachtig in datzelfde ge
hucht Tsjetsjelnik waar zijn groot
ouders hadden gewoond. Enkele
maanden geleden werd in de
Uilenburger synagoge in Amster
dam het werk uitgevoerd dat Jeff
Hamburg uiteindelijk maakte.
De woorden die zijn overgroot
moeder in de suikerfabriek vaak te
horen kreeg waren goed aan hem
besteed geweest: 'Terpe kind
mains, Terpe'. Oftewel 'hou vol,
mijn kind, hou vol'. Zijn zoek
tocht was uitgemond in een uni
verseel muziekstuk over zoeken,
gedenken en thuiskomen.
