Some indispensable equipment for building and
repairing dikes.
Top left: Mattresses, covered with quarried
stone, constitute a dependable aid to prevent
further erosion in the gullies and to form a firm
foundation for closing them.
Bottom left: The sandbag, an essential require
ment for closing a gap or constructing temporary
dikes.
Right: The closing of a breach with the aid of
the small unit caissons built in the Netherlands.
These caissons are placed in position by means
of a floating crane and filled up with clay.
Top centre: The mighty Phoenix caissons, made
available by Great Britainandmeasuring3400and
7500 tons respectively. The small unit caissons
may be seen on either side of the gap to be closed.
